Mackenzie Fama, Director

Mackenzie Fama, Ph.D., CCC-SLP joined the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at The George Washington University as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2022. She is a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) and has experience working in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and in a community-based aphasia center.

Dr. Fama’s undergraduate training in linguistics and philosophy inspired her to pursue a career focused on removing communication barriers that negatively impact individuals’ quality of life. She earned her master’s degree in speech-language pathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and worked for four years as an SLP in inpatient rehabilitation at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. She then went on to pursue a research doctorate at Georgetown University under the mentorship of Drs. Peter Turkeltaub and Rhonda Friedman. For her dissertation work, Dr. Fama used brain-based and behavioral research methods to examine the subjective experience of inner speech in aphasia.

As an Assistant Professor at GW, Dr. Fama directs the Fama Aphasia Recovery Lab and teaches graduate coursework in aphasia, motor speech disorders, and research methods.

Outside of work, she enjoys chasing her toddler around playgrounds all over the DC area.
