Recent Events

Fall 2024

  • Dr. Fama’s paper “Evidence from Aphasia Suggests a Bidirectional Relationship between Inner Speech and Executive Function” was published in Neuropsychologia! You can download and read it here completely free until October 30, 2024.

  • We are pleased to welcome 9 new undergraduate: research assistants to the lab: Lucas Flanagan, Mimoh Lee, Isabella Brosco, Emily Pradhan, Ava Dean, Abby Wittkamp, Ilham Jafar, Maddie Daggett, and Kate Bryan. We also have one high school student joining us, Gabi Konde.

Summer 2024

  • Dr. Fama and former lab members Sabrina Schwartzman and Emma Metzler’s paper “Self-reported longitudinal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults with acquired communication disorders” was published in the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology! You can read it here. Please email us if you do not have access to the article.

  • Dr. Fama and Dr. Erin Meier’s paper “Picturing Better Materials: Normative Data on a Novel Illustration Set for Scientific and Clinical Use” was published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology! You can read it here.

  • We are pleased to welcome two new research assistants to the lab. Oona Foxe and Lora Lewis are rising juniors at GW.

  • Dr. Fama earned a departmental Seed Grant for one year of funding to study inner speech and executive function.

  • Dr. Fama applied for an NIH Early Career Researcher Award (R21) on inner speech and executive function.

Spring 2024

  • In January 2024, we welcomed a new graduate research assistant: Stephanie Sullivan, a first year SLP Masters student.

  • Undergraduate senior Jessica Schwartz had a poster submission accepted to the annual conference of the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia - this is a joint project with SLP Alycia Laks in the Cognitive Recovery Lab at Georgetown.

  • We’re revising journal articles for Neuropsychologia, American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology.

  • Data collection for the treatment study is ongoing!

  • We are pleased to welcome a new research assistant to the lab. Sofi Finn is a junior at GW.

  • In April 2024, Suzanne Pfeffer successfully defended her thesis, entitled "Using Lesion-Symptom Mapping to Investigate the Neural Correlates of Inner Speech". Congratulations, Suzanne! We are so proud of you!

Fall 2023

  • In August 2023, we welcomed two new graduate research assistants: Meredith Lobb and Alyssa Ranieri. They are both in their first year of the SLP Masters program.

  • Dr. Fama received a renewal award for her NIH Loan Repayment Program award.

Summer 2023

  • Dr. Fama, Sabrina, and Molly were accepted to present at the 2023 ASHA convention (Boston, MA in November) about our collaborative naming stimuli project with Dr. Erin Meier’s TAN Lab (https://tanlab.sites.northeastern.edu/) at Northeastern University.

  • We are pleased to welcome two new research assistants to the lab. Maeva Talla Mogo is a rising sophomore at GW and Carly Dacanay is a 2023 graduate of Loyola University's undergraduate program in speech and hearing sciences.

  • Dr. Fama and colleagues presented a virtual training for mental health providers in the DMV regions entitled "Best Practices for Working with Clients with Communication Disorders". This was a joint project with the Stroke Comeback Center and SCALE and was received very well by attendees -- we hope to do another training in the future!

Spring 2023

  • In May, we said congratulations to our graduating members of the FAR Lab! Sabrina Schwartzman and Molly Goodnow graduated GW’s undergraduate program in speech, language, and hearing sciences. Mattie Bartels, Amrita Grewal, and Emma Metzler graduated from GW with their Masters in Speech-Language Pathology. Alexis Famuyide graduated from Poolesville High School. We are so proud of you all!

  • We hired a new research speech-language pathologist, Haley Anderson! We are so happy to have her on the team. You can read more about her on the “Our Team” page.

  • In March, Sabrina Schwartzman (undergraduate student and lab manager) presented at the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia conference in Richmond and won 2nd place for her poster in the Communication Disorders Poster presentation contest. Congrats Sabrina!

  • Dr. Fama was accepted to give a platform presentation at the Clinical Aphasiology Conference, which will take place this May in Atlantic City.

Fall 2022

  • Emma Metzler (grad student) and Suzanne Coyle (SLP collaborator) presented our poster “Longitudinal impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults with aphasia and other cognitive-communication disorders” at the annual convention of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association in New Orleans, LA in November 2022.

  • Dr. Fama gave a platform presentation “Does inner speech support executive functioning in aphasia?” at the 60th annual meeting of the Academy of Aphasia in Philadelphia, PA in October 2022.

Summer 2022

  • Dr. Fama was awarded K12 funding through the Neurorehabilitation and Restorative Neuroscience Training Network. This two-year project will include a treatment study on inner speech in aphasia (mentored by Dr. Leora Cherney, Northwestern University and ShirleyRyan Ability Lab) and imaging studies on the neural bases of inner speech in aphasia (mentored by Dr. Peter Turkeltaub, Georgetown University Medical Center).

  • Dr. Fama was recently featured as a guest on the podcast “About, From, and With”, where she discusses her journey in academia with Danika Pfeiffer, PhD, CCC-SLP. Check it out here!
